The IRLI (Immigration Reform Law Institute) was founded by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) to act as their legal arm and to work on cases that deal with the laws and regulation related to the current policies on illegal immigration in this country - particularly the cases that involves U.S. citizens that are impacted by these policies.
IRLI stated that they have of goal of "working exclusively to protect the legal rights, privileges, and property of U.S. citizens and their communities from injuries and damages caused by unlawful immigration." They have taken the stance that illegal immigration at its current level is harmful to citizens, and they focus their legal and litigation activities on help private citizens, business, or organizations that have been harmed by illegal immigration.
Both organizations - the Federation for American Immigration Reform and the IRLI - have stated that they believe that uncontrolled immigration will cause serious harm to the country. That is why the IRLI focuses its efforts on the organizations and companies that have allegedly been ignoring these regulations and encouraging further immigration.
The IRLI works with both businesses and individual citizens in different types of cases. They consult with individuals who claim that they have experienced discrimination in the workplace, either because the companies would rather hire illegal immigrants at or lower pay rate, or because the individual voiced displeasure about the company's policies toward hiring illegal residents. The IRLI claims that because they have limited resources, they can only get involved with a small percentage of cases where legal help is requested, but they have already started the litigation process on many cases like these.
In the business world, the IRLI represents and consults with various companies that feel they are facing unfair business practices because their competition is hiring illegal immigrants. This gives the competition an unfair advantage and can cause the company that hires only legal residents to lose contracts, revenue, and profit.
Both the IRLI and the Federation for American Immigration Reform have stated that they believe there are many problems stemming from illegal immigration, such as the declining wages and work conditions that U.S. citizens have to deal with because companies discriminate in favor of illegal immigrant labor. This is one of the things that add to the unfair business practices above.
The IRLI pursues other areas of litigation, too. They have pointed out other problems like the illegal immigrants in the schools that require extra resources or special treatment. This can have an adverse effect on the educational experience for other students. Some of the other litigation revolved around the landlords that filled their properties with illegal residents and created some very poor living conditions.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform will continue to use the IRLI as their legal affiliate to pursue these cases on a local and state level. This is where they believe they can have more success than they would at the federal level.
